Given Names and symbols of St. Mary

  1. A.Given names related to her magnificence & her relation with God

  1. 1.The Queen standing on the right side of the king

Asstated in Psalm 45:9 “Kings' daughters were among your honorable women: on your right hand did stand the queen

In view of that, St. Mary is always drawn in all icons on the right hand side of Jesus Christ

We also call St. Mary in the liturgy “Our Lady & Queen”

  1. 2.We also call her “Our Mother St. Mary”

As Jesus Christ told John his disciple while he was crucified on the cross "Here is your mother” (John 27:19)

  1. 3.

A ladder was set on the earth with its top reaching to heaven (Genesis 28:12)

This is a symbol of St. Mary, whom by giving birth to Jesus Christ she brought the inhabitants of the Land to the Sky

  1. 4.

Because she is the true bride of the Lord,

The Lord’s verse in psalm 45 was fulfilled in St. Mary “Listen, O daughter, and consider, and incline your ear; forget also your own people, and your father's house”

Therefore, she was named as Soliman’s Friend.

  1. The king's daughter is all glorious within: her clothing is of wrought gold
  1. 5.The Virtuous Dove
  2. 6.St Mary is also described as the cloud

This reminds us with the dove that returned to Noah with an olive leaf in her mouth. This was a symbol of peace, from which Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth. (Genusis 8:11)

Therefore, The Priest incenses in front of St. Mary’s Picture saying “Hail to you, virgin Mary the virtuous dove”

St. Mary is as simple & pure as the Dove, and like the dove who carried the good news of salvation after the flood, St. Mary has also carried the good news of salvation in Christ

Due to her high level, and also as her visit to Egypt has been described in the prophecy, as stated in the book of Isaiah the prophet:

“A prophecy against Egypt: See, the LORD rides on a swift cloud and is coming to Egypt.
The idols of Egypt tremble before him and the hearts of the Egyptians melt with fear” (Isaiah 19:1)

The term cloud signifies its height, and indicates the Lord who will come on a cloud, as referred to in (Matthew 16:27)

  1. B.Given names and symbols for being the mother of Jesus
  1. Other Motherhood titles
  2. The meetings Tent (The Dome of Moses):
  3. Since she is described as the Eastern door, she is the door of life, the gate of salvation:
  4. .Also St. Mary was referred to as the holy Temple

Theotokos is the Greektitle of Mary, the mother of Jesus

The Council of Ephesus decreed in 431 that Mary is Theotokos, and St. Kirollos insisted on using this name in response to Nestorius>

Elizabeth has called St. Mary “The Mother of My Lord” (Luke 1:43)

We call her “Ty Shory” which is a Brazier in Coptic. Also we call her Haron’s Assyrian. The Coal symbolizes the human nature of Christ, and the fire symbolizes his divinity, as it has been stated in the bible “For our God is a consuming fire” (Hebrews 12:29)

The Brazier refers to the Womb of the Virgin Mary in which Theology was united with Human Nature.

The fact that the Brazier is Gold, showsthe greatness and purity of St. Mary.

Because of St. Mary’s purity and sanctity we call her in the Hymns- the Golden Brazier.

For as the heaven is the dwelling of God, so was the Virgin Mary during the sacred pregnancy, dwelling place of God.

This was stated in Psalm 87 “Glorious things are spoken of thee, O city of God

Also she was called the “City of the great king”, and has made certain prophecies on Jerusalem or Zion become true. As stated in Psalm 87 “And of Zion it shall be said, this and that man was born in her: and the highest himself shall establish her

This is Jesus Christ; the church calls her accordingly in the third hour’s prayer “Theotokos, you are the true vine who bore the Cluster of Life”

+ The mother of the true light, as Jesus Christ was called “the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world” (John 1:9)

+ The Golden Lighthouse as she carries the light

+ Mother of the Holy- when the angel toldSt. Mary about the birth of Christ he said “the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God

+ Mother of the Savior- Because Jesus Christ is the Savior of this world.

You shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21)

As the Hymn says: The Bush Moses saw is as blessed St. Mary, who carried the Lord nine months and no harm touched her (Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up-Exodus 3:2)

“For our “God is a consuming fire.” (Hebrews 12:29)

The fire within the bush refers to God, and the Bush refers to St. Mary.

Have them make an arkof acacia wood,Overlay it with pure gold, both inside and out- Exodus 25:10-22

This symbolizes the purity and greatness of St. Mary.

The ark carried inside St. Mary with her greatness and other symbols of Jesus Christ

This ark contained the gold jar of manna, Aaron’s staff that had budded, and the stone tablets of the covenant (Hebrews 9:4)

Because the Manna was a symbol of Christ, as he is the true bread from heaven, whoever eats lives forever?

I am the bread of life (John 6:48)

Since Jesus Christ is described as the manna, St. Mary is described as the Manna platter that carried the true bread from heaven.

As she carried the flourish of life, although no life is in a rod and cannot grow into a flower.

This refers to the virginity of St Mary which by keeping her virginity it was impossible to give birth, however this happened through a miracle. This description is stated in Sunday’s “Ebsaleya”

The lord was present in the meetings tent as well as was present within St. Mary. In both presences the lord showed his love to his people. Thus we say in “El Ebsalmodeya” The Dome Moses created on Mount Sinai- is as St. Mary who God is present inside her.

This is the door Ezekiel the prophet saw, and The LORD said to him “This gate shall be shut; it shall not be opened, and no one shall enter by it, for the LORD God of Israel has entered by it; therefore it shall be shut. (Ezekiel 44:1-2)

And the glory of the LORD came into the house by the way of the gate facing toward the east. (Ezekiel 43:4)

This refers to the Virginity of St. Mary, who came from Eastern countries, and has kept her virginity.

St. Mary is referred to in the book of Ezekiel as the door that the Lord has entered and left (Ezekiel 44:2)

If the Lord is life, then St. Mary is the door of life, as the Lord said “I am the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25)

Therefore, St. Mary is the gate of life, the door which the Lord came out from giving life to all believers.

If the Lord is salvation, he came to save the world “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10), accordingly St. Mary is the gate of salvation

It is not surprising that St. Mary is named as the gate, since the church was also named as the gate, as Jacob said about Bethel “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God and this is the gate of heaven” (Genesis 28:18)

The priest would only enter this holy temple once a year, to ask for forgiveness on behalf of his people. Also the Lord entered inside St. Mary only once to make salvation to the whole world
